The night I Almost got Scammed by the “US Military”

{Warning! This is long.
You can skip to the bottom of the post for the juicy stuff,
I won't be offended.}

So, long story short {yeah right}. Matt left for Super Summer yesterday in the Jeep {Cherokee} pulling a trailer with a Rhino on it. He called me a little while later to tell me he was on the side of the road with, yet again, radiator trouble. After pulling over several times, filling it with water, etc he ended up having to call a buddy to come pick him up and take him {and the rhino} to camp.

Yep, still taking pics of everything with my new camera!

We've been talking about the need to 'trade in' the Jeep for a more gas efficent car some time soon {basically before the Jeep kicks the bucket}. Ooops. We waited too long I guess. So, I jump on the net being half way silly and search Craig's List for cars. I narrow it down to the nearest big town and searched "Honda Accord". Second listing!

2004 HONDA ACCORD EX SEDAN, BLACK, AUTOMATIC - $1700

What the crap!?! Click. Click. Click. WOW! This is for real a 2004 Honda for 1,700! I text Matt. He writes back, "for real". I email the link. CRAZY. I email the seller {no phone # or I so would have rang'm up}. Waiting. Waiting. Bed time routine. Waiting. RESPONSE!

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay's Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you won`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in London, UK, and I was sent here with my department of peace maintenance. One month ago my husband moved here with me and brought the car with him but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can't register it here; it has US specs and everything and registering it here in Europe will take for ever.
My final price on it is $ 1700.00. If you will take it for this price I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me ASAP if you decide to buy and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

{PAUSE}

Okay, having heard that much, what camp are you in?

  1. Holy molly! Did you buy it?
  2. You're retarded. That's 'too good to be true'
  3. I'm confused. Where is the Jeep now?

{BACK TO THE STORY}

I call Matt. No answer. "End Call" dial again! 3 times. I hit reply...then thought, "better not buy a car with the hubs 'go ahead'" Call my dad. No answer. Sit. Stair at the email... Emotions going back and forth: This is crap. Maybe God is doing some craziness here? I want this car! I want to believe it's a God thing. Sold. It's a God thing!!!

My dad calls back. I start telling him I might be buying a car. Matt 'beeps' in. "Dad, it's Matt. I'll call you right back."
Matt, "You rang?" Me, "I'm buying the car. Did you get the email I forwarded you?" Matt, "No." Me, "I'm buying the car. Here's the cool story {insert me reading him the email}"

I swear not all days in our life are 'drama' filled ;0)
It was a little less frantic than I'm telling it but it's more fun this way.

No cheering on the other end. ... {cherp cherp} ... "I think it might be a scam..." Me, "WHAT!?! She gave us her title. the car's ven # and...stuff" Matt, "____ just told me about trying to buy a car and mentioned eBay. It ended up being a scam. Twice." Me, "Poo-E! Go read the email. Let me know what you think." Matt, "K. I'll call ya back."

I reread the email. "I don't want it to be a scam...{pouty face}" I thought to myself in my miraculously quiet house with 3 sleeping babies by 8 o'clock.

I googled her. Yep. I copy and pasted "Monica Dixon, SSgt, USAF1 SOMOS/MXOOA Maintenance Analysis 362-1594 Comm 884-1594". This is the 1st article I found:

Used car buying scam from “military” personnel

This post is about a person who tried to also shopping Craig's List for a car. They too found an unbelievable deal. They too emailed the seller. They too relieved a response- almost Identical to the email response I received:

Hello and sorry for my delay,

I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

POOOOOOOO!"" --->SCAM!

This happened to her more than once.

One member of the forum responded with this advice:

1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.

2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.

3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?

The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.

They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

I really wanted it to be a God thing. Some times He really does cool stuff like that but other times He gave us brains to not fall for scams.

I text Matt, "Scam". Forgot to call my dad back who {way} later returned my call out of curiosity. So, lesson learned- just let'n you know- don't fall for this scam. Oh yeah...and I emailed them back:

I really wish you weren't trying to scam me. This would have been a huge blessing for my family. I wish you all the luck in finding a legit job soon!
{http://www.katylee.com/blog/2008/01/13/used-car-buying-scam-from-military-personnel/ - you might try switching it up a little}

Okay, not my most mature moment. Made me feel like I'd served some kind of justice, DORK! Now, I have to go back to mourning my fake car loss.

How about you? Did you know my car was a scam? Have you ever fallen for one?

~~~
For the record. I KNOW this has nothing to really do with the US Military. I appreciate ALL they do for our country. I have friends and family who have are serving. And Do NOT really associate them with this scam. Sorry these turds are misusing your titles.
To show my appreciation for our military I'd like to share some info brought to you by your friends at http://www.militaryvaloan.com/: military streamline loan and VA loans explained.
  1. Sweetie, two things……. Don’t spend a large sum of money without ” think” time. Second, research the make, model and year of a car before purchase. 2003 and 2004 Honda accords are known for weak transmissions that needed to be replaced around 50,000 to 85,000 miles. Voice of experience here!
    • I totally agree that “think” time is a must for spending big amount of money. This purchase, though seemingly hasty, was long awaited. We’d been doing research for a while now. We’ve been saving money and were prepared to spend this when the ‘right’ car came up. This, if it had in fact been real, would have been a GREAT deal we’d been looking for; even with the possibility of needed the transmission replaced. Thanks for your voice of experience and causion!
      This post was mainly ment for the funny story of avoiding the scam ;O)
      • Mike Downs says
        HA! I was looking for an RV for the deer lease, looked all the way over in Louisiana (I live 25 miles North of Dallas), found one for $2700 that was going for &9500 all day, every day. Text the number (no e-mail add. provided), got a response early this am – “sorry, RV not available anymore but my friend have one, here’s her e-mail add – barbaracoop11@gmail.com“. E-mail her, she has an even BETTER RV for only $2500! Throughout today, I’ve been bothered by things about the correspondence, and, of course…it’s too good to be true. Looked up the “ebay motors attorney” to whom I was supposed to send the money – town house and no working phones. So I did what you did – Googled the military acronyms – BOOM! Scam revealed. So glad I didn’t go against my gut!
  2. Yep, had scam written all over it… Sorry you didn’t get the car you really wanted though. 🙁
    • Yeah, reading back over it, it’s pretty obvious. It would have been awesome though. Keeping my eyes peeled for the real God-sent car!!!
  3. Are you kidding me!!??!!
    I just got another email SCAM from a listing on Craig’s List:
    Hi,
    I want to be honest with you, the car is in perfect condition and runs
    great has 93,800 miles, Automatic, 3.0L engine, title clean. No damage,
    no scratches, never involved in an accident, clean title, never been
    wrecked and is in the same shape as the pictures show. The point is, its
    been well cared for, never abused, and needs nothing. Runs excellent!
    This 2004 Honda Accord Hybrid has been extremely well maintained with a
    full service history. Bought it when i was serving in U.S. Army base
    near Bethesda, MD.
    I have dropped my price to $2,650 (purchase price) since this is an
    Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before 25th June when I will
    be deployed to a US Forces Japan ( http://www.usfj.mil ) base for an
    entire year.
    If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email
    me your Complete Name and Shipping Address to open a case with eBay they
    will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
    The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will
    have a 7 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. In
    this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of
    this transaction.
    Hope to hear from you soon,
    Sergeant nurse Angela Cummings
  4. My 16 year old daughter just came to me with this same exact post. She is very computer literate and internet savy but when you tell a teenager to look into it carefully because it sounds way to good to be true they automatically hate you for wanting to mess up their “GOOD” thing.
    As I haven’t seen her today since this morning (She’s now at work) it will actually feel terrible to see her reaction when I have to show her. Although she probably will think I’m gloating for being right.
    I am very glad that this post is out there and is on Google, Thank you :O)
    • It totally stinks! THIS 27-year-old almost got taken and SOoooo wanted it to be for real. I didn’t think through the whole “it’s too good to be true” fact. I’m so glad I could help but super sad that we both were almost scammed AND still didn’t get this awesome {impossible} deal.
      Dear John’s daughter. You’re daddy loves you so much and is looking out for you! Be encouraged: we did eventually find an awesome 2001 Honda randomly at a used car lot when visiting family out of town. Average millage, a few quirks, but scored it for $4200. Keep saving and your eyes open! They are out there!!!
      Praying you guys find an awesome REAL deal!
      • that is super sad. I found 2005 accord for 1900 dollars. I need a good car for work and for my children. I was going to be sending the money this week, but felt weird about it. So I thought I would google her name to see if anything came up about her. I am glad I did tho. I can afford a car let alone spending money I already cant afford on this deal. Thanks for putting that out there
      • You are so welcome! Those like you who are caught in the same too-good-to-be-true situation that I found myself in are the whole reason I wrote this! I’m glad I could save ya from the scam although I am sorry is wasn’t true. I was wicked upset when I realized I almost fell for it!
  5. We’ve been looking for a car for my son and came across this car…too good to be true. I too emailed the seller and got the following email back. Again…too go to be true, I looked her up and found this website and found this blog…so glad I did!!!
  6. We wanted to buy a Pontoon boat and a Ssgt, Monica Dixon has one in Montana she wants to sell quickly.
    I believe this is the same person that you experienced.
    This has scam written all over it.
    Thank you for your blog…..
  7. We found a pontoon boat on Craigslist. Here are her emails to us. The thing that got us so cautious is the fact that she was in such a hurry. We also thought the price was to good to be true. Glad to see you posted these.
    Thank you
    Hi again,
    The boat is at the shipping center in Helena , MT and from there will be shipped to my buyer’s address. For this transaction I want to use Google Wallet because I want to provide you a fast and very secure way. They will handle the transaction for me. You will make the payment to Google Wallet and they will hold the money until you receive and inspect the boat. Only after you receive the boat and you inspect it (you have 5 days for inspection) they will release the payment to me. This transaction is covered by Google Wallet Transactions and if something goes wrong in this transaction you will be fully refunded. On the invoice you will have the details on how to make a refundable payment and shipping back the boat will be my concern. I strongly assure you it will not be the case for a refund. I have used Google Wallet in the past and all my transaction ended successfully.
    I apologize if it seems like I’m pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure that everything is clarified before any further steps. I’m a serious seller and I prefer to deal with a serious buyer. I want a fast and safe transaction for both of us, so if you wish to proceed with the purchase, please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the transaction.
    I am looking forward to hearing from you,
    • I am so glad you researched it! And thank you so much for sharing your emails to help others not get scammed!!! The identical wording I read is what solidified the scam for me. Thanks again for taking the time to share!
  8. As a fellow blogger, it was so cool to see you using your powers for good. I was in the market for a pontoon. I found one on Craog’s List for an amazing price, but with few pictures and no contact information. I emailed…starting to sound familiar…Miss Monica (still declaring the title SSgt) replied with gorgeous pics galore, a lengthy description of our dream boat, BUT the caveat that we would have to conduct the transaction through Google Wallet. Now, her story is that her husband has died and she and her daughter were so distraught they moved away and want to rid themselves of his belongings and memories. VIOLINS PLAY HERE! It seemed to good to be true, so I googled and found you. Thank you for posting this and saving me the trouble of having to figure out her scam on my own.
    • You are the THIRD person TODAY to comment on This post. I hadn’t heard of the new “pontoon for sale”. lol Thanks soooo much for sharing your experience!!! I honestly felt like a goob sharing my ‘almost getting scammed’ story but am so glad I did. It had helped save lots of people from silly SSgt Monica. hehe
  9. My hubby just showed me the exact same pontoon boat and the exact same letter posted above! He was disappointed that it was a scam but thank you so much for posting this!!
  10. Jules,
    Thank you so much for writing about your experience. We too found the Suncruiser Pontoon on Craigslist. Sounded way to good to be true, so, we Googled it and found your blog. What a bunch of creeps. At first we thought it was a mistake. The original price listed was $2450. When we went back to look at the listing, after E-mailing them and asking for more info, it had been pulled. Glad we found your post! Thanks again and God Bless.
    • I am so glad I could help. I felt like such a goob & almost didn’t write about it here bc I felt so silly. I am so glad it’s helping so many people!
  11. Well, “Monica” is at it again. Now she’s selling a pontoon from Montana. I came this close…until I found articles like this one! Thank you
    • You are so welcome! Sorry that pesky Monica is a fake. We ALL wish she weren’t!
      • Thank you so much for sharing your story! I also found the same Pontoon Boat on Craigslist, that others are mentioning. Something just didn’t seem right when I received the “invoice” and I called Google Wallet, they verified that, in fact it was a SCAM. I googled the persons name last night and found your story but my husband was still holding on to hope it was not a scam so I went ahead and told “Monica” to send me the invoice. As soon as I saw it I knew, but I still called Google Wallet, to make it even more clear to my husband that it was a scam. Im so glad I was the one handling everything and not him!
      • That’s cool to know that Google at least oboes it’s going in even if they can’t neccessarily stop it yet. You’d think “Monica” would change up her name and story a bit to go with the new pontoon. Weird! Glad this post helped!!!!
      • Hey Jules,
        Thank you so much for posting your experience. “Ssgt Monica Dixon” tried to sell me an RV on Craigslist. I started getting a little suspicious because it was a deal, just a little too good to be true. So I googled her name and found your story. My response to her was not nearly as kind and diplomatic as yours but I’m just glad that I found you and saved myself a good amount of money. Thank God for people like you! Blessings!
  12. I too had this Monica try to scam me for the Honda accord. I figured it was a scam but gave her my name address and phone number plus userid for my eBay account. Good thing is my eBay account is registered under a different address and phone number. As soon as I read your post, I called to get my ebay acct closed. It takes about 7 days. Should I be worried?
    • Brdnda,
      I’m not sure if there’s reason to be concerned. I would hope that calling to shut down the account and reporting the scam would make sure these people can’t do anything further. Since I never got that far, I’m not 100% sure though. Sorry.
      When you find out and/or get everything settled, I love for you to come back and let us know what all it involved!
    Fortunately, once I saw this info it sounded funny so, I began to check up a little bit and found several sites like your where similar scams are listed.
  15. Im glad I looked this up, the same thing happened to me I had a feeling it was a scam, I looked up the name “monica liston” and this story came up after reading it I seen how similar things were. How sad people can be these days! She told me the whole “afghanistan story” to!
  16. It seems like Sgt. Stacey Beland is at it again on Craiglist with the posting below. I am so glad that I came to this site and saw all the scams that these people are doing. Please don’t fall for this one….
    “My name is Stacey and I want to tell you that the 2001 Keystone MONTANA 2955RL is still available.Let me give you a few details about it. Really good shape, never had any problems with it, no need to invest money in it, flawless exterior/interior condition, has never been lived in, always maintained no leaks very solid non smoker very clean, has everything a big rig has but in a smaller package. Length (feet): 32, Sleeps 4,oak cabinets,19 inch tv,am fm stereo radio with tape player,hot water heater is gas or electric automatic pilot.refrigerator also gas or electric,queen size bed in the master bedroom.I will let the hitch,equalizer bars,sway bar etc. goe with the trailer. This is a unusually nice trailer which will not disappoint and all in very good condition and much more.
    The price is $2,000 and is low because I want to sell the trailer very quickly. My husband died 3 months ago and me and my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Kentucky the trailer is here with me, the shipping is free and i will offer 5 days to inspect and take it to your mechanic from the moment you receive it (and the option to accept or reject it) I can’t afford to take days off my work for this sale so I’m trying to sell the trailer online.If you are a serious buyer please contact me as soon as possible.”
    Thank you
  17. Ugggg, really sucks because I just got scammed by this today. My soon to be ex husband borrowed and totalled my kia that I’ve had for 10 years. So for a month now my 9 yr old autistic son and I are taking cabs. I saw the craigslist ad and emailed. I feel like such an idiot. 🙁
    • Tara, I am so sorry!!! Don’t feel like an idiot. I so wanted it to be real and almost went for it. So many Have; you’re not alone. I hope you can find a way to get your money back!
  18. Oh and mine is Sgt. Mary Sparkman lol but I was told that I could test out the 2003 Range Rover for 5 days BEFORE sending any money!! Which to buy was $2,750.
  19. Just about got scammed by SSgt. Grace Robinson on pontoon boat. I happened to give my name and address, but did not follow through on payment. Thank goodness.
  20. Back at it again. I don’t know why scammers don’t at least change the name they have used in the past. I mean really. They must be really stupid. So let me tell you how you can get back at the scammers. If they ask you to send them money tell them it is on its way and give them a fake western union Id.
    My very favorite is when they contact me when I am selling something and they want to send me a check for the item. They ship me a check for say $5600 for an item I have for sale for $1K. They say sorry I sent you more than I should have. Please cash the check and send me $4K You keep $1k for the item and $600 for your trouble and they say their shipper is on there way to pick up the item. Find a home that is for sale by a bank in your neighborhood. Have the scammer send you a check with a fake name. You could even have the check made out to the scammer and tell them you have the same name and it must be fate they are so stupid. Then after they send it. Write them and say you never got it. They will send you another one. It is funny let them burn up money on postage and just keep telling them you need your money asap they will send another. Then tell them that you have another address and give them another with a fake address and just keep them going so they waste $100s on shipping fees it is too fun as they are hoping you will send them $4K.
  23. Thanks for this blog post. I almost fell for it. Well not really. I was skeptical so I Googled the name. She claimed to be army, but Staff Sergeant in the army is SSG, not SSgt. That’s USMC and USAF. I really wanted it to be true though. Would’ve been a nice trailer for a nice price.
  24. Thank you so much for this article.
    I was always taught”If its to good to be true than it probably is” this rule also saved us from what could of been yet another problem for us. I have enclosed the email on Craigslist that almost took us as,well. Till I did some digging. There was just something about the “having to do this so quickly” in the email that made me wonder.. Here is the listing on Craigslist:
    • I am so glad that what I felt was a “confession of my silliness” post turned out to be so helpful to so many. I am also thankful for you and everyone else sharing their stories and adding to scam-busting going on here on this {at first} embarrassing post!
  25. Thank you Jules
    I was about to buy a rv/trailer until I copied and pasted some info. and your blog came up. of course to good to be true.
    Steve
    • So sorry Steve! I did just what you did and found other peoples info so now I’m sharing since I’m not the only one. Too bad there aren’t really awesome deals like that out there. 🙁
      • My husband and I almost fell for the same scam. She’s still hard at it after all this time. We were looking to buy a new camper and ran across hers. She gave us the same story about Afghanistan and how it had to be sold by August as she couldn’t take it with her. Same ebay story also. But now she has a friend working with her. He has a listing for a camper on Craig’s list and when you inquire about it he tells you that his has been sold but he has a friend who has one. Then he gives out Monica’s name and number. So glad that we found this on here. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is I guess.
        Thanks for posting.
    Thank you for your interest, my 2006 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE 6 Cyl Automatic is still available for sale.
    There are no flaws or dents or any kind of damage. Never been in an accident. Mileage: 69,934. Vin number: 1N4BA41E66C818725. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. Options: well, every single option available on this model. I have the clean title in hand.
    My name is Joshua Labble, I am a Staff Sgt. stationed at Aitos Logistic Center, Bulgaria. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take forever. One advantage is that, as a POV (privately owned vehicle) of a military employee, the car can be shipped to anywhere in US for free It will arrive at your address in max 4 business days.
    To make this as safe as possible, I only want to do this through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program, the most reputable escrow service online.This way, you won’t have to pay any money to me until the car is already registered under your name. Ebay will hold the payment until you receive and inspect the car. After you receive the car you will have 10 days (from the moment you receive it) to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. They will secure the transaction making it safe for both of us.
    The price is $1800. There are no more taxes, fees or anything, that’s all you have to pay. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction, payment and shipping details from them once I start the transaction.
  29. I was scamed out of $1800. I don’t know what I’m going to do now. That money was EVERYTHING I had. I’ve been in a bad place for a long time, that car was suppose to be the start of my way out of this terrible place. Now I have nothing, and no hopes of anyway out of my situation. To some people $1800 is not a lot of money, to me, it was the key to a life of no more beatings, and happiness, or a start towards happiness. I hope whomever stole my money and my hope is happy.
    • Denise, I am so sorry you were scammed! Being stolen from is terrible no matter the amount but $1800 IS a lot of money. Last summer when I invested $100 to start refinishing furniture {buying and selling after fixing} as a way to save up for our family’s new vehicle. It was non-stop for like 4 months and if someone just scammed me out of all that hard earned money {all that I had} would have been AWEful! I am so so so so sorry! I totally understand the magnitude of that situation.
  31. holly sh*t I’m so glad I googled this so called SSgt Joshua Labble USAF1 SOMOS/MXOOA maintenance analysis DSN 339-1794 COMM 434-1794!! I knew it was too god to be true!! I got even more suspicious when I said meet me at the DMV so I can get tags and make sure everything is cleared there. Or at the police station for my safety. That’s when h e claimed to be in training and the car is on base with him. He said he could get it to me within 2 business days! I asked about shipping costs. He tells me he’ll handle that at no cost to me. seems fishy you’re only asking for 2,000 for a practically new car. Then you’re willing to pay shipping. Hell he isn’t really making no money if he’s paying shipping costs even though he claims he gets good military discounts. Also he said the car is insured but the pictures he sent don’t have a tag. One more thing that stuck to me was he kept asking for my name and address. Even after I asked for information on where to send the money. Thank God I had enough brains to research and Thank you for confirming my instincts
  32. What about the pontoon for sale from SSGT Grace Robinson? Is that a scam?
    • Merl, very possibly. Sorry 🙁 I’ve been told there are several big-ticket items they’ve moved onto using different names but all with the same too-good-to-be-true offer and request for money upfront {usually ebay}.
    also frustrated that they are using the military in their fake deals.
    • Sally, I wouldn’t think they could do too much with your email and cell number. All the scams with this layout seem to be after just the money and aren’t long term annoyances that would continue to use the email and phone number. 🙂
    Hi again Omar,
    Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me and I can ship the RV everywhere in US. I can ship at your home address within 3-5 working days. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing/inspecting period after delivery.
    First thing you need to make the payment to eBay. Once you receive the rv, you have 5 days time for any inspection. After this 5 days period if you agree to keep it you will have to notify eBay to forward me the payment, but if you don’t like it, the shipping company will take it back (on my expense) and eBay will give you a full refund, but I’m sure you will love the2012 Keystone Sprinter Copper Canyon and this won’t happen.
    This way you will see and inspect the trailer before I get paid. eBay actually holds the money until buyer is satisfied with the vehicle. It’s also a fair way to complete online deals.
    If you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:
    full name & complete address & phone#.
    After I will have this details I will forward them to eBay and they will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal.
    Best wishes!
    full name & complete address & phone#.
    After I will have this details I will forward them to eBay and they will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal.
    MY RESPONSE email will not be so nice. 🙂
  39. Gloria Wallace is up to the same tricks again. Posted a motorhome in OH but it’s in NE. Same exact email with just the type of MH changed. CRAZY PEOPLE!!!
    Ok so since I myself served in the military I spotted right away that she isn’t sure if she is Army or Air Force. Second we were told so many times to not advertise where we are located, where we are going and when we will be gone! She also didn’t answer my question or send pictures so wanting to see how much they were vested in the scam I emailed back asking about the inside and just how shipping will work! I figure since I know its a scam I’ll see how far they are going to go since they aren’t getting a dime from me. If I get a response back I’ll let you know. Also the craigslist add has been taken down.
    • I love hearing from someone who actually served in the military. I wouldn’t have identified those things right away. Thanks for sharing!
      • Rachel S says
        Well she responded but of course not answering the question about the unit, big shock there! My response back wasn’t so nice I couldn’t take it anymore! Here it is:
        Hi again,
        Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me and I can ship the RV everywhere in US. I can ship at your home address within 3-5 working days. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing/inspecting period after delivery.
        First thing you need to make the payment to eBay. Once you receive the rv, you have 5 days time for any inspection. After this 5 days period if you agree to keep it you will have to notify eBay to forward me the payment, but if you don’t like it, the shipping company will take it back (on my expense) and eBay will give you a full refund, but I’m sure you will love the 2012 Jayco Jay Feather Ultra Lite and this won’t happen.
        This way you will see and inspect the trailer before I get paid. eBay actually holds the money until buyer is satisfied with the vehicle. It’s also a fair way to complete online deals.
        First off Gloria (or who ever you actually are),
        What your doing is called stolen valor and it is sickening! That you would prey on people and claim to be one of my sisters in arms is outrageous! You are no better than the people throwing our flag on the ground and stomping on it! Our men and women are going to Afghanistan and fighting for our freedom and dying. The fact that you would use that as a reason to get a quick buck is ridicules! You are preying on those who need a nice vehicle but can’t afford it and you are tarnishing the name of veterans! It is utterly sickening! And the fact that you do it time and time again with other model trailers and motor homes and cars is horrible (stealing pictures that someone else posted no doubt). You need to grow up and get a real job stop stealing and preying on the citizens of this country and stop stealing the valor of our military!
        From someone who has actually served it is quite obvious that you never have! You have no idea what you are talking about nor how to act as a member of our armed forces!
        Grow up and get a real job and for once be a contribution to this country not a drain on it!
    Hello again ,
    Right now I’m in a military base( Malmstrom AFB , MT ) and i have the camper here with me. We are training, getting ready for Afghanistan. I am only allowed to check my email twice a day. We have to stick to e-mail for now. Hope you can understand. Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing/inspecting period after delivery. During that 5 days inspecting period I will not be getting any money.If you decide when you receive the camper that for any reason you don’t want to keep it then you will send it back on my expense. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can get the ball rolling.
    I also made a photo album,so you can view more pictures:
    Thank you !
    So, a friend of mine said that sounds too good to be true, ask them to show you a copy of the title to this RV. But instead I googled the name she gave and I found your blog….
    I have to say thank you for keeping this info going. These scammers are still out there and I really appreciate your efforts in making us aware of what is going on. Much appreciated. It sickens me to think there are people using the military as a scam. My son currently serves in the Marines and I can’t believe this is still going on since I see your post began years ago. But again, thank you for keeping us all aware of this scam.
      This is the one I just “bought”. Well found out too late about “Barbara Cooper” gmail bring fraud. I was scammed over a 2008 Jayco Jayflite. Sad as this was my VA disability back pay. It was to get a place for my grandsons and I so I was off the streets. Looks like I am back in my car and them at a relatives. I responded Tia craigslist ad who referred me to his friend in the Air Force who was deploying. I thought I had done my checking well. I call the “eBay motors” number listed on invoice. Apparently not good enough. I am angry!! This will take months to recoup enough money to look for another place. Daughters going to be mad at hubby and roommate as they said go for it. She didn’t know anything until it was paid for.
  43. Evidently Monica is still trying to scam people. I recently posted an ad for my travel trailer on craigslist, she emailed a request for more information. Something didn’t feel right so I googled and found this blog. After reading these posts I’m concerned that she is going to try to scam someone with pics and info from my legitimate ad. Beware if you see an ad from her for a 2012 Keystone Hideout FLB19. I’m near Boulder, CO, really do need to sell my trailer, local pick up, cash and carry. People like Monica make life harder for us all. Best wishes, Gina
    • Wow, I’d never really thought about all the effort “Monica” is going to in an effort to get real pictures of fake things she’s selling. Thanks for sharing!
  44. I’m so glade I just read this because we just found a great car and the lady by the name of Anna Nixon was selling a 2006 Nissan murano and it said pretty much the same thing but at Fort Belvoir and she could ship it to us free of charge!
    Hello,
    My name is Verna, and I’m emailing you about the Two 2008 Yamaha Fx 3 Jet Ski’s with Trailer, 57 & 59 hours and run great.. Never had or need any paint/body work done, garaged keep always, without any mechanical problems, working perfectly. Have a clean and clear US titles on my name and there are no liens or loans on it. This Jet’s was used by my husband who died 4 month ago. The price was reduced at $ 2000 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell it before the 15 of the next month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store my jet’s. Hate to sell them but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year. Also, the jet’s are to risky for my daughter so there’s no use on keeping it. If you interested, I can send you more pics.
    Regards
    Third: The Jet’s are already at our Military Logistic Department crated and ready to go. I’ve asked them to allow viewers to go there and inspect them but their reply was: “We are not a showroom!”. The Logistic Department will deliver the jet’s to your home so the shipping is free for you. Since the jet’s are in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the jet’s are in their custody.   56. SCAM!!!
    Now it is Stg Beatrice L. Bloomer email tacoma2u@gmail.com
    Selling Jet skis . ITS A SCAM!!!!!!!
  57. I was also in a similar emailing scam with two jet skiis. The name was beatrice bloomer. She wrote the same stuff as you did in your article. Said she was on base. Lost her husband 4 mos ago and had no need for the jets anymore. Selling 2 2008 skiis and the trailor for 2500. I was jumping up and down! Had so many awesome pics … she emailed me back and forth for two days until i told her i couldnt buy anything without first trying them out. My hubs will not just give me money to give someone without first seeing the goods. I am not a frequent on craigs list of ebay. This liating was initially on craigs list….the next day it was taken off there. I emailed and asked why this had been taken off so fast and she replied the whole ebay thing that you wrote. They would ship it and hold the $ for 5 days until i am satisfied then she would be paid. Well red flags were flying….but like you i loved them already!!! So sleek and pretty! And what a blessing of a price! Im a sap for a sad story as well….lost her spouse…has a daughter….deployed for a year with her medical team. Boooooo! Shame on them. I can tell now by the language that they def r not from the USA. So sad. What is this world coming to? Too good to be true…#nodignity. i wont name call but man do i want to you Beatrice Bloomer!!
  58. Thank you for this post!
    I’ve been looking for a rover on CL, eBay, Autotrader, just really taking my time to find the right one.
    Saw this post yesterday with a gorgeous car, low miles, body kit, just beautiful. They left a phone number, I texted, and they said they’d email additional photos.
    This was their email:
    Glad you are one of the people interested in buying my 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. I’m selling it because I’m serving in Offutt AFB, Nebraska but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I don’t need it anymore at this time. Let me give you a few details about it: mileage: 60,899, Engine: V8, Air Conditioning, Power Locks, Power Windows, Power Seats. Also, everything is working properly. Not interested in a trade and my final price is $9,000.00. I have a clear title, free of any liens or loans on it, under my name.Also, I’ve attached you some more pictures with the car to this email.
    If you are interested in buying it or if you have any questions, please reply to this email.
    I googled because it just seemed too good to be true and found this post! Might not be the same person, but definitely sounds like the beginnings of the same scam!
    They’re using this email address:
    Pattriciiawhiite898@gmail.com
    Thanks for sparing me the waste of time messaging this person!
    We all know these things are probably too good to be true, but just once wouldn’t it be nice not to be scammed and just have something cool fall in your lap? lol
    Oh well!
    Hi again,
     As I’ve told you, at this moment I am in Offutt AFB, NE in a military base. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The reason I’m selling this car way below market value is because don’t have time for negotiations and I need money before August 30 for my next house in Anchorage. The car is already at our Offutt Air Force Base Library form Offutt AFB, NE crated and ready to go. Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 1-2 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 10 days testing period after delivery. During that 10 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info  for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction.
    My boyfriend just found a beautiful diesel truck on Craigslist. $2000. Seller is Beatrice Bloomer. Scam!
    Military widow. Also military and shipping out soon. Sent the same eBay buying as the others. She sent a car fax too.
    Of course craigslist post is gone. How do you report this?
    • Sorry, I wish I knew how to report it but I’m not sure. Deleting the posts makes it really hard. Especially on Craigslist when there is no real “head” of the website since its all free. I think that’s why so many of us have gone to sharing our stories on places like this to help others.
      • I got the Nissan Titan 2004 story from Beatrice Bloomer but this time it was her son who died and she was asking $2000 because that is the same amount “the government” gave her for the lost of her military child. We got suspecious after her second email saying that eBay will contact us. I did my research called eBay, they confirm it was a scam and to be double sure I Google her name, not expecting to come across this blog. I’m so glad I did, we really felt sorry for “her loss” we have family in the military and we can’t even imagine something happening to them in combat. This country already dosen’t do enough for our military and to top it off you have these “terrible” people !!! Our military friends and family do need help when they are ready to deploy and as a community we should help them. However people like these make it hard to believe!
    NEXT e-mail:
    Morning Alan, I’m glad that you are still interested. I will do my best to explain you the whole process. At the moment I’m stationed at a Military Force Base, CFB Petawawa. The van is already at our Military Logistics Department from CFB Petawawa, ON ready to be delivered. Since the van is in a military base with no access you can not go there and take it only the uShip can deliver it because they have access in our base.
    uShip is like a third-party in our deal. I have signed a contract with uShip because they are able to take care of the whole sale (even if I am not there when the sale will take place), meaning that they will ship the van to your address and also will handle the payment for me. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the van and will release it to me after you agree to keep it. The most important thing is that this company offers a return policy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 5 days to inspect the van. If by any reason the van is not as described, or if you find any problems with it I will pay for the returning fees and you will receive your money back. I’m sure it won’t be the case because the van is in excellent condition.
    Shipping may take anywhere between 2-3 business days depending on the destination. All the documents including the ownership and the bill of sale with my signature on it, will come along with the van.
    To make this deal happen I must ask uShip to send you the terms and conditions/invoice, but before I can do that I need your approval. So in order to move forward with this deal I just need your full name, full shipping address and a contact number so I can register the deal with uShip, and after that they will contact you with further information on how to buy my van.
    The shipping costs and insurance during transportation are included in the price.
    Thanks for your time,
    Next e-mail:
    They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the van.
I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. You will have 5 days to test and inspect the car prior to making any purchase.     Hello,
    The boat is still for sale. I just got divorced and the Bennington was awarded to me in our divorce. I have a low price ($21,500) because I want to sell it before July 31st ideally. I have a deployment coming up and would prefer to have my mother who is taking care of my children, have the cash instead.
    Now, a few words about this 2016 Bennington R23 RCW Tritoon 25′ (the trailer is included). This bennington R23 comes with 300HP Mercury Verado Motor, engine type 4 stroke, 25 lenght and only 83 hours on it. Loaded with virtually every option. Rare Windshield with Arch and granite passenger table. Kicker Stereo and speakers, Garmin, Docking lights, interior lights, cup lights, exterior lighting, additional movable seat.
    In perfect working condition,with nothing mechanically wrong – like new! No scratch to the paint, no sign of rust. Owned by a non-smoking family with no pets, interior always clean and tidy.
    If you decide to buy it, you’ll receive all the papers, owner manual, keys, a buy-sell contract already signed by me and the clear title.
  71. Your story just saved us in the same exact scam and ironically it was for something we’d also been praying about. Our prayer was that God would provide something we could really use but can’t afford, and while the offer we found seemed too good to be true we know He often provide for us miraculously so we didn’t want to rule out his divine provision. We prayed for wisdom and knew that he’d give it as promised. I then came across your post. We are still believing he can and will provide what we need, and are grateful for his guidance and protection while we wait,
    • I’m so glad I was able to save you from that heartache. It’s so hard when we want to have faith in miracles but not be scammed by the world. Sorry about this slow response. I sure hope you’ve been able to find what you’ve been praying for!
