What’s that…SQUIRREL!

When I was in 5th grade I was labeled at ADD/ADHD…I don’t remember which one. For one entire school year I was sentenced to take medicine called Ritalin. Not knocking the diagnosis or the medicine but for me it was an undisciplined social little girl who wasn’t “good” at school but loved being there to hang out with her friends.

I vividly remember walking back to the class room one day after lunch. My friend and I were near the front of the line. We had a hold of each other’s hands goofing around when I suddenly let go of her hands leaving them to fly loose and smack her in the face. It bloodied her lip. She began crying {as would I if I was 5th grade and my BFF just made me bleed}. Our teacher rushed toward us and her first words after checking on my friend were directed in my direction, “Did You Take Your Medicine?!?” I had forgotten it that day. I don’t know that it would have made a difference in my behavior. The whole class stared at me in disapproval. I was so embarrassed. I was the girl who was broken and needed medicine to correct her. She was in need of assistance to make her like everyone else.

I begged my mom over the summer to release me from my sentence as a convicted “hyper child”. She allowed me to begin 6th grade free of my daily walk of shame to the nurse’s office for meds. My teacher that year sweetly invited me up to her desk the first day of school and politely asked me if I’d be taking “medicine” this year. When I timidly informed her I was “trying it without” she never said another word. I trained myself to behave as directed and along with many other things that transpired over the next few years I began a relationship with Jesus Christ.

It’s been almost 18 years; high school diploma, wonderful marriage, a degree in psychology, and 3 children since that dishwater blond girl stood in the hall ashamed she wasn’t “normal”. I’m still the girl who doesn’t want to be labeled. I want to rely on that relationship with Christ to overcome my faults in the eyes of the world. I want a “fixed” life through Christ. I’m still learning to accept that I am who I am because Christ formed me this way. Hyper activity. Timid. Outgoing. Odd. Silly. Blunt. Originally Me. Some days I like me. Some days I don’t. Either way, it’s the way God made me. It’s the way He is continuing to make me. I’m being formed more into his likeness every day. Squishing out the bad, filling it in with some good. He's using everything for His glory. It doesn’t always look like what the world expects. It doesn’t always look like what the world accepts. It doesn’t always look like what the world wants. It doesn’t always look like what I expect, accept, or want. God has so many different facets that there is no way he could make one human being to fulfill his likeness. That’s why we are called the body of Christ. It takes each, unique Christ follower to make up His image. I’m learning my role in this body.

What are you? An arm? A mouth? A tooshy? An eye. A leg? A fingernail?

Find what God is creating you to be. Enjoy it. What’s your purpose in the helping the BODY accomplish its big picture? Relish in the fact that even among your body parts there is none exactly alike. As I look at my fingers as they type, none are the same. Even my pinkies have something a little different about each one. That’s what makes them…them.

The Seek God Challenge Day 25

THE GOSPEL IS OUR ONLY HOPE

(THE CHARACTER OF GOD)

READ

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things were created through him and for him.

-Colossians 1:16

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in welldoing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality.

“I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior.”

 -Isaiah 43:11

“But I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior.”

-Hosea 13:4

THINK

We know there are depths to God that we will never grasp or understand, but we have been given pictures of who God is through His Word. Colossians 1:16 gives us the picture that God is our what?

It also shows us (see the last three words) about our relationship to him. What does it tell us?

Romans 2:6-11 lets us know that we will be held accountable for our actions and will receive based on our seeking. What is granted to those who seek good things?

We see the picture that God is our creator and we were created for Him, and that He is our just judge and finally in Isaiah 43:11 and Hosea 13:4 we see that we need Him because He is our what?

PRAY

These thoughts and prayers are just a guide to get you started in your conversation with God. Think of them as conversation starters rather than a check list to quickly pray.

Thank the Lord that He created you for a purpose and that you belong to Him.

Thank Him that He is a righteous judge and treats us mercifully when we do not deserve it.

Thank Him that He alone is our salvation.

DO

Wrestle with how you should respond to those aspects of God today. It may be in a song, or a poem or a picture, etc. Just respond to God.

The Seek God Challenge Day 24

THE GOSPEL FOUNDATION

READ

“21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

-Romans 3:21-26

THINK

We see quickly in verse 23 that all human beings are what?

Verses 24 & 25 tell us that “redemption” and forgiveness of that sin come as a result of Who? And as a result of what?

We as humans can take hold of this forgiveness how?

And then in verse 26 it tells us that we can be justified or made acceptable by what?

PRAY

Pray that we will clearly see that the truth and our spiritual, eternal condition will be made plain to us

Pray that we will begin to view those around us in light of the scriptures and see their need for Jesus

DO

Take your list from yesterday and write a note to one of the people on it letting them know that you are praying for them. It can be a text message, facebook message, handwritten note, etc. Then take a few more moments and pray that God will give you an opportunity to share the Gospel in there life.

The Seek God Challenge Day 22

THE WORD MUST BE SHARED

READ

“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” -2 Timothy 4:2

THINK

Paul’s final instruction to his apprentice Timothy is to “preach the word” what images come to your mind when you hear that phrase?

We often think that it is simply the job of paid staff at churches or other Christian ministries to preach the word however; the Bible calls us to share. What difficulties come as a result of sharing the word in your life?

What fears are there that keeps you from sharing God’s word with others?

PRAY

Pray that God will help erase the misconceptions about sharing His word

Pray that the Lord will create a Spirit of boldness which will lead you to sharing God’s word with others.

The Seek God Challenge Day 20

THE WORD TRANSFORMS US

READ

“16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”                                   -2 Timothy 3:16-17

“2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”                  -Romans 12:2

THINK

We see that Paul is telling Timothy of the many things that the Word of God will do (2 Tim. 3:16), and training in righteousness is a phrase that may not make immediate sense to us. What do you believe that it means?

Matt mentions that “God’s Word is not just given to us for information. It’s given us for transformation.” How does this kind of transformation take place in our lives?

Paul warns the church at Rome (Romans 12:2) against becoming like “the pattern of this world, “ and then tells them to be transformed by the renewing of your mind” How can you renew your mind? If we begin to gain the mind of Jesus how will that transform our lives?

PRAY

Pray that you can renew your mind today to become more like Christ

Pray that you will devote yourself to the Word of God so that it will begin to transform you into the image of God

DO

Renewing your mind starts with letting go of the things that consume us in this world. Spend a few moments sitting with your hands closed in front of you, and as you sit there imagine putting all your stress, and hurts, and even goals and desires into your closed hands. Then talk with God and ask Him to help you let go of these things and begin to renew your mind and focus on Him then open them and imagine God taking all of that from you.

Begin to memorize Philippians 4:8 so that you can bring that to your mind when you are tempted to or find yourself picking those worldly things back up.

“8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” –Philippians 4:8
