SEEK HIM WHEN IT'S DIFFICULT

READ

1 Now they told David, "Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors."2 Therefore David inquired of the Lord, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" And the Lord said to David, "Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah."3 But David's men said to him, "Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?"4 Then David inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, "Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand."5 And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

Psalm 27

The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Of David.

1  The Lord is my light and my salvation;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

of whom shall I be afraid?

2  When evildoers assail me

to eat up my flesh,

my adversaries and foes,

it is they who stumble and fall.

3  Though an army encamp against me,

my heart shall not fear;

though war arise against me,

yet I will be confident.

4  One thing have I asked of the Lord,

that will I seek after:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life,

to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

and to inquire in his temple.

5  For he will hide me in his shelter

in the day of trouble;

he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;

he will lift me high upon a rock.

6  And now my head shall be lifted up

above my enemies all around me,

and I will offer in his tent

sacrifices with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

7  Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;

be gracious to me and answer me!

8  You have said, "Seek my face."

My heart says to you,

"Your face, Lord, do I seek."t

9  Hide not your face from me.

Turn not your servant away in anger,

O you who have been my help.

Cast me not off; forsake me not,

O God of my salvation!

10  For my father and my mother have forsaken me,

but the Lord will take me in.

11  Teach me your way, O Lord,

and lead me on a level path

because of my enemies.

12  Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;

for false witnesses have risen against me,

and they breathe out violence.

13  I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord

in the land of the living!

14  Wait for the Lord;

be strong, and let your heart take courage;

wait for the Lord!

THINK

When things get busy, or difficult in our world our first instinct unfortunately is to stop spending time seeking God. I don’t think its intentional always but there’s so many things that have to get done that we drop what seems to cause the least damage. How does that contrast with David’s attitude in the text?

What do you feel is the most remarkable about David’s attitude in this instance?

Psalm 27 gives us an even better picture of the heart of David as he endured hardship and yet constantly sought and relied on God. He had been anointed king some time before and in the midst of being pursued by the current most powerful man in the nation did not give up on God, but rather pressed into Him even deeper. Why do you think that is? What difficult thing is happening in your own life right now?

PRAY

These thoughts and prayers are just a guide to get you started in your conversation with God. Think of them as conversation starters rather than a check list to quickly pray.

Remember the quote Matt read : “There is no simple and easy way to know God personally. You need pain, suffering, struggles, and pressure to know and trust Him fully. “ This is not an easy thing to process, the thought that difficult situations are often times divinely designed to push us closer to God is not one that we like to dwell on.

Ask God today to use whatever situation that is difficult in your life today to draw you closer to Him

Pray that you will have the discipline that time seeking God will be the priority rather than an afterthought

DO

Read through Psalm 27 again and this time write down the things that David asks God for; ie. “Hear O Lord; Give me not up the will of my adversaries, etc.” Then pick one that best speaks to your life today.
