Olympic Rings Craft

{and some other...stuff}

Instructions

  1. Give each child a piece of paper {you can cut in 1/2 if you want}
  2. Squirt each color onto a small paper plate with 1 tp/paper roll assigned to each color
  3. Show your children a picture of the Olympic Rings or do an example yourself
  4. Encourage your children to mimic the example
  5. While you tell them the history of the Rings and what they stand for
  6. Lay flat or hang to dry

If your kids are crafters like mine you may want to add these steps:

  1. Talk about your children's favorite Olympic happenings
    • sports
    • athletes
    • event {just something they've seen while watching the Olympics}
    • team {may not even be the USA}
  2. Gave them paint a picture of what they told you
  3. Glue animal crackers in place {as the "athletes" and write their name/team if you want}
  4. Lay FLAT to dry {so "athletes" don't slide}

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe {adapted from the Duggars for sensitive skin}

My recipe is based of the Duggar Family Recipe found on DuggarFamliy.com.

Grate bar of soap into a saucepan with the warm water. Stir continually {don't let it burn on the bottom of the pan} over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

Fill up a 5 gallon tub half full of hot tap water then add the melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Mix it really well until all powder is dissolved. After that, fill the tub to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

In the morning, stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with your homemade laundry detergent and diluted it more by filling the rest of way with water. Shake before each use {bummer}. It will gel- how cool, huh?!

You have the option to add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil. I didn't use anything extra. The Dove has minimal smell but the "no smell" is okay with me. I've been using this for detergent for about 2 weeks now. Works for me!

Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

  • Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)
  • Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)
*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!

My Laundry Room Smells Like Poop {Thoughtful Thursday}

I walked into my laundry room today after several days of my drier being broke and was almost knocked on my butt by the smell of poop!
Does your laundry room ever smell like "code brown"? Wanna know why? And how to get rid of the feces stench?

Your front loader is to blame! Yeppers. These little boogers are a life save in the world of dirty laundry from oodles of blessings running around. BUT there is a #1 rule I didn't couldn't stick to the past couple days:

Air out the washer by leaving the door open

When the heating coil went out on our drier all of a sudden I left loads of wet laundry in the washer until I had time to pull them out and hang them to dry. #FAIL Leaving the wet clothing in the washer added to the moister inside the washer and of course, the door was shut for longer than normal resulting in STANK!

Even when you do move laundry quickly and air out the washer, there are still lots of places that hold moister and result in mold and mildew. These places should get cleaned out every once in a while to avoid the smell of a diaper gene in your laundry room.

The Door

The Detergent Tray

The Gasket {apparently what this rubber stuff is called}

I just used some multipurpose cleaning spray, warm water, and a washcloth to wipe down each of these. I didn't really take that long and if I did it more often I bet it would take even less time. I think ran a "santize" cycle with nothing but white vinegar in it to make sure the parts I couldn't get to will be cleaned as well.

Now I just have to remember to do this ~once a month to keep the poo smell away. Does your laundry room stink?
